Travel to Ireland Declines

The travel industry in Ireland has fallen on hard times. The number of international guests is at its lowest level in nearly a decade, since 9/11. As you might expect, the global economic recession is mostly to blame for the decline of the travel industry in Ireland. Of course, bad luck also played a role. Because of cheap airfares and its close proximity, guests from the UK are the most frequent visitors to Ireland. Unfortunately, the UK was mired in a deep recession for 18 months. They were one of the last European countries to emerge from the recession. Even today, their economy remains unstable.

Not surprisingly, the decline of guests from the UK was the number one reason for the decline of the travel industry in Ireland in 2009. Recent figures confirm that UK travel to Ireland was off by an astonishing 21 percent in the last quarter of 2009.

What does the future hold? After a tough winter, many industry insiders are predicting a strong summer session. They are quick to note that the strength of the dollar against the euro should encourage increased travel from America. Unfortunately, the UK economy remains unstable, so it is unlikely that their citizens will be visiting the Emerald Isle anytime soon.
